Nature of Mining and Mineral Engineering

          Mining is a primary industry devoted to taking minerals out of the earth, improving the quality, and then supplying those minerals to other downstream industries to process and use in production of almost every commodity. Mining activities are not only challenge of mining to convert mineral resources to man’s use with maximum utilization, but also achieving its purpose with a minimum disruption to the other resources of land, water, and air.
          The basic works of a mining engineer are exploration and evaluation of an ore deposit to reveal the quantity and quality of the ore deposit with systematic works and skills. When a decision is made to mine a deposit, mining engineers play the important roles to design and develop mining system and producing the raw minerals with carefully considering of health and safety in the operations. After mineral are mined, a mineral processing engineering will step in to separate the impurities or improve the raw minerals and make it ready to use in the following industries.
Mining and Mineral Engineering Programs in Chiang Mai University
          Department of Mining Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University has been established since 1982. The undergraduate mining program is designed to educate and train students to become the qualified mining engineers, who will be able to design, operate mine and produce raw minerals with the intensive knowledge of mine and equipment design, mineral processing, geological techniques, and mineral economics. Two types of mater programs, type A-1 and A-2, are offered to the public in 2000. The main purpose of master program is to support mining engineers in both private and government sectors who needs to conduct new research and apply new technology to solve problems in mining and mineral processing methods.
          Within the mining engineering objectives, two main specialized courses; mine planning and design, and mineral processing, are integrally offered. The mine planning and design includes equipment selection, drilling and blasting, plant and accessories design, rock mechanics and its application courses for underground construction, and mineral economics. Those courses in the mining part include knowledge of both surface and underground mine planning and design. The mineral processing courses provide students with concepts and skills of mineral processing and metallurgy. The program has room for both major and free elective courses for the students to pursue what they interest in novel mining technology such as tunneling, geostatistics, mine environment, computer applications in mining, and clean coal technology, etc.
