On 21 January 2026, the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University, participated as a speaker in the training program entitled \u201cDecarbonization Technology for Cement and Concrete Industries.\u201d The program was developed by Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology in collaboration with Thammasat University, with support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and was held at the Institute of East Asian Studies, Thammasat University, Rangsit Center.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The training aimed to strengthen foundational knowledge on climate change, Thailand\u2019s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), and the \u201cThailand Net Zero Cement & Concrete Roadmap 2050,\u201d thereby enhancing the capacity of the cement and concrete industries to implement concrete greenhouse gas mitigation measures.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On this occasion, Associate Professor Dr. Suparit Tangparitkul, Lecturer at the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering and Director of the Chiang Mai Research Center for Carbon Capture and Storage (Chiang Mai CCS), delivered a lecture entitled \u201cCarbon Storage Technologies and Implication to Thai Cement Industries.\u201d The presentation provided an overview of CO\u2082 geological storage technologies, including the current status of storage in saline aquifers, design considerations for CO\u2082 transport and storage systems, and strategic options for industrial clustering. These include both joint investment in shared transport and storage infrastructure (Joint Venture models) and potential integration with large-scale infrastructure in suitable regions. The lecture also addressed Thailand\u2019s \u201cCCS Trilemma,\u201d highlighting key challenges across technical, regulatory and governance, as well as cost and investment dimensions, together with proposed pathways for collaboration among government, industry, and academia.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The program further featured presentations from key sector representatives, including \u201cOverview of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) Technologies\u201d by Dr. Pongkarn Chakthranont on behalf of the Thailand CCUS Alliance (TCCA); \u201cPathways of CCU Implementation for Thai Cement Industries\u201d by Mr. Surachai Vangrattanachai of the Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA); and \u201cBusiness, Carbon Accounting & Policy\u201d by Mr. Boonrod Yaowapruek of The Creagy Co., Ltd. Collectively, these sessions reflected integrated perspectives spanning technology, economics, and policy frameworks necessary for advancing CCUS deployment within the industrial sector.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
