Chiang Mai University Co-organizes the “UK–Thailand Technical Exchange Workshop: Towards a National Roadmap on Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)”

Chiang Mai University, through the Chiang Mai Research Center for Carbon Capture and Storage (Chiang Mai CCS), co- organized the “UK–Thailand Technical Exchange Workshop: Towards a National Roadmap on Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)” held on 19–20 November 2025 in Bangkok. The event was organised in collaboration with the British Embassy Bangkok, the Thailand CCUS Alliance (TCCA), and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). The opening ceremony was presided over by H.E. Mark Gooding, the British Ambassador to Thailand, and Mr. Wuttikorn Stithit, Vice Minister for Energy. The workshop aimed to strengthen UK–Thailand cooperation on CCUS technologies and to support the development of Thailand’s national CCUS roadmap toward the Net Zero 2050 target.

As one of Thailand’s leading academic institutions advancing CCUS research, Chiang Mai University played an active role in the workshop. Associate Professor Dr. Suparit Tangparitkul, lecturer at the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering and Director of Chiang Mai CCS, participated in his capacity as Secretary of the TCCA Steering Committee. He also served as a co-facilitator in the breakout session focusing on regulatory and governance frameworks for CCS deployment in Thailand, building upon findings from the national legal review previously chaired by himself.

Additional representatives from Chiang Mai University contributed to the workshop, including Associate Professor Dr. Sirichai Koonaphapdeelert, Energy Research and Development Institute – Nakornping (ERDI), and Associate Professor Dr. Roengchai Tansuchat, Director of the Center of Excellence in Econometrics, who provided expertise on engineering, energy systems, and economic dimensions relevant to CCUS development.

The workshop featured leading UK experts who shared key insights and practical experience, including Professor Jon Gibbins, Director of the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre (UKCCSRC) and Professor of Power Plant Engineering and Carbon Capture at the University of Sheffield; Ms. Laura Hardiman, Senior Consultant at Crondall Energy; and Ms. Kate Pilling, Policy Specialist in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The UK delegation presented lessons learned from the development of the United Kingdom’s CCUS strategy, covering regulatory frameworks, investment mechanisms, business models, and advanced technical considerations—providing valuable guidance for shaping Thailand’s national CCUS strategy in alignment with the Ministry of Energy’s “Quick Big Win” initiative to accelerate CCS deployment toward the 2050 Net Zero goal.

The Thailand CCUS Alliance (TCCA) is a national partnership network established on 14 March 2025 by NSTDA through the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), in collaboration with government agencies, industry, and academic institutions—including Chiang Mai University as one of the founding members. The alliance is supported by the Program Management Unit for Human Resources &Institutional Development, Research and Innovation (PMU-B) to drive systematic and impactful CCUS development in Thailand.

This workshop welcomed more than 70 participants from government, industry, and academia, all playing key roles in advancing CCUS deployment in Thailand. The event formed part of the UK–Thailand CCS Knowledge Exchange Week, following the TCCA study visit to the United Kingdom in May 2025 and the UK–Thailand CCUS Roundtable held in June. The continued commitment of the United Kingdom in supporting Thailand’s CCUS advancement underscores the shared ambition to accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon, sustainable future.

Chiang Mai University’s active involvement in this international workshop highlights its leadership in carbon storage engineering, carbon capture and utilisation technologies, and CCUS-related regulatory and policy development.
